Summer in my weedpatch | ||||||||||||||||||||
Finally it's here! |
Summertime... This is what we dreamed about last winter on those deary, cold days. The brilliant sun is shining, the little birds are singing and busy bees are buzzing around me. Everything is green and growing here in my garden. We enjoy green beans often. I find that I have better luck with pole beans here in Kentucky. At first I resented having to string them, but now I find it is well worth the trouble. Here is a simple recipe that I use a lot: Boil your prepared green beans for about 7-10 minutes. This way they are crispy-tender and full of all the vitamins.Drain them, sprinkle a pinch of salt ,some chopped fresh garlic, and some sweet basil over them. Drizzle with olive oil, toss and enjoy! By far the easiest vegetable to grow must be Squash. Here you just make a hill, drop a few seeds in it, and jump back.Soon you have Squash coming out of your ears. Time to make Zucchini bread, muffins, casseroles, pickles, stuffed squash of all sort, and stir fry.(my favorite).I use any vegetables I have at home in it. Onions, mushrooms, peppers, celery, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, sliced carrots. Season with garlic, thyme, parsley, basil, oregano, rosemary, whatever you like.

Herbs are fun to grow and they come in so handy! Try some Basil, it is so pretty when it blooms. So is Sage, with it's blue flowers.I put some Sage seeds out one year and it grew very well. By fall the plant took over the whole top terrace of my herb pyramid. It lived for several years without any problems, and then it was wore out. So I did it again. Parsley will come back year after year, and so will Dill. I found the best way to save herbs for winter is to put some in a small jar and freeze. Of course I dry a lot, too, and save in spice jars. But beware of peppermint, it will take over if not carefully checked! It is coming up in all the most unlikely places. You can also buy the little potted herbs at the supermarket and go home and plant them in your herb bed. They do good! | Herbs

Flowers are here to be enjoyed. I put them right in my garden, so I can see them all the time. I sprinkle seeds next to my broccoli, onions, whatever I grow. The best ones are Sunflowers, Zinnias, Calendulas, Marigolds, and Cosmos. They work well for me. If you know of any better ones let me know! I find this way the bees are attracted to my garden and pollinate the veggies. It might even keep a few bugs out. Plus I can go out there and make bunches to bring into the house and enjoy! Can you see them in the picture here next to the text? Yeah, I know it looks wild, that's why I call it the weedpatch. However, it does really well . There are frogs, turtles and snakes in there, too.I put little dishes of water out for them. For the frogs I put clay flower pots, upside down and partly propped up so they can sit under them. They like it. Often, though, they sit under big cabbage leaves. I try to work with nature, not against it. I figure:" God knows best." Surely it would be a waste to try and improve on the way he sets everything up.
